THE LAUGHING FOOTBALL GOD

Oh, Samba boys!
We thought you would dance,
Like the Brazilians of old,
But you abandoned the rhythm,
In the chill of the South African hinterland.
Oh, Maradona –so full of promise!
But what happened?
Off your shoulder,
Was the ‘Hand of God’ lifted?
England,
For so long the melting pot
Of the game’s finest skills –
Rooney, did the magic of Africa,
Drive you into your shell?
Nigeria – oh, Nigeria!
For so long our darling,
When did the romance of your game fade?
When J.J hung his boots?
Or after Kanu got old?
Germany,
You seemed to be the one,
The ‘blue blood’ flowing in you,
Enchanting us with the beauty of your game,
But the god of football,
Upon you poured out his wrath
Did you not pay obeisance to him?
